The 2026 season is over for our Washington Nationals. After the disappointing West Coast trip (which I enjoyed immensely despite the losses) the Nationals finished the season strongly, with a series split (Phillies), three series wins (Cardinals, Tigers, and Mets) and a series sweep (Angels). During this time, several young players, including pitchers, showcased talents that we can look forward to next year.
Seeing Josiah Gray back on the mound in DC was especially delightful. Indeed, he earned the first save of his career. His prior role as a starting pitcher never provided this opportunity. Perhaps we will see him next year in a relief or closer role.
Awards season has begun. Jacob Young and Nasim Nuñez appropriately received the team “Good Guy Award.” And, not surprisingly, James Wood earned “Player of the Year” honors while Cade Cavalli earned “Pitcher of the Year” honors.
Daylen Lile recently has been named one of three finalists for the 2026 National League Gold Glove Award in left field. He finished the season with +2 Outs Above Average (OAA) and +8 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). The Gold Glove winners will be announced on November 1.
The Nationals are one of five finalists for the 2026 Bud Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence, recognized for their work to expand healthy food access in Washington, D.C. through the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. The Nationals are being honored for combating food insecurity in Ward 7 (where over 50% is classified as a food desert) by distributing more than 1.4 million meals since 2018 and running the area’s only year-round produce market. FANS CAN VOTE FOR THIS AWARD UNTIL OCTOBER 16.
Down of the farm, the Rochester Red Wings defeated the Memphis Redbirds to claim their first International League title since 1997, advancing to the Triple-A National Championship. The team had an exceptional year and Matt LeCroy earned the International League Manager of the Year award.
Let’s become the envy of sports!
