After the record-breaking collapses against the Phillies, the Nats regrouped and had a successful road trip to Baltimore and Boston. The team won each of the series, 2-1.
Individually, certain players have performed exceptionally lately. Last week, Luis Garcia Jr. earned the honor of National League Player of the Week after showing his offensive prowess. Garcia’s honor is especially noteworthy since he is not an everyday player.
Abrams continues to hit well and is setting records for RBIs by a shortstop.
On Tuesday in Boston, Cavalli was both a villain (to the Sox) and a hero (to the Nats), pitching the best game of his career amid a benches clearing brawl, which resulted in the ejection of Wilson Contreras (among others) for throwing a helmet at Cavalli. Cavalli has apologized for using the term “boy” when he told Contreras to “sit down, boy” after striking him out.
The altercation appears to have fired up Cavalli, who threw 7 innings of one-hit ball with 13 strikeouts. The last time a Nats pitcher went seven innings with one hit or less and double digit strikeouts was Max Scherzer in 2018. Let’s keep rolling, Cade!
Management continues to work on shoring up the bullpen. Mitchell Parker is out due to the need for Tommy John surgery. Richard Lovelady is on the 15-day IL. But, Trevor Williams has started a rehab assignment and the team is continuing to sign and to move pitchers among the nationals farm system to try to address the need for a sturdier bullpen.
The Nationals lead the league with blown saves at 25 (and 26 saves). Imagine where we would be if we had only half that amount of blown saves. The Houston Astros have only 5 blown saves (and 26 saves).
The Nationals are two games above .500 but sitting in fourth place in the highly competitive NL East. In June, the Nationals went 13-14, tying for 13th among the teams. Other teams in our division, however, lit it up in June. The Marlins went 20-6 and the Phillies went 18-9. Let’s hope these teams cool off and we heat up.
