I woke up in Greece this morning and checked my phone for the Nationals score, as I’ve done every morning while tripping this year. The Nats were down 3-1 against the Giants in the top of the ninth inning. I immediately turned on the audio broadcast.
The above photo showing the glee of Abrams and Nuñez says it all. After 28 failed attempts to come back when trailing in the eighth inning, they finally did it. According to Charlie Slowes, the team spirit in the dugout was at its highest level yet this season. BTW Nuñez celebrates victories with his own type of bubbles (this one after the team won the second game of the Padres series).
We’re still contending. Tell me what you think of the new “tarps off” section during home games where exuberant fans gather in the right field upper deck and take their shirts off. I’m on the fence. On the other hand, anything that helps raise team spirit works for me. Who would’ve thought “baby shark” would catch on the way it did?
Let’s talk about the Marlins. No doubt, that was a very disappointing series, being swept by a divisional team with an inferior record. There are times, however, when another team just knows how to beat us. We did it to the Braves often during the first 10 years when the Nats were in DC. I remember because my good friend, Rob, is a Braves fan. He and I would bet dinner on the overall W-L of the season matchup. One year it was Nats 12 wins to Braves 6 wins. That year, the Braves only lost 60 games — a full 20 percent of their losses was to the Nats! Let’s not worry about the Marlins.
Happy Pride Month! And time for a cuteness overload. My great nephew, Liam, loves the Nationals, his family and all the pretty ladies, which he was able to enjoy on a recent sunny day at the park.
And, Natty is growing and is happy to greet the team every time they return from a road trip.
The Rochester Red Wings are still winning and providing every day playing opportunities for some names we will soon see returning to or joining the team in DC — House, Ortiz, King, Ford, and Morales. Also, Eli Willets has been promoted one level in the farm system.
Although I am now in Greece, on the lovely island of Paros, I recently spent a few days in the village of Goreme in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey. I was able to enjoy a bucket list hot air balloon adventure over the very interesting terrain with the geological formations they call “fairy chimneys.” Amazing!
Let’s go get the Giants for the next two games.
