On Friday, Natty, the new mascot for the Washington Nationals debuted in DC as the team hosted the Orioles to kick off MLB rivalry weekend. The puppy is adorable!
Natty, the team’s first-ever team dog, is training to become a future service animal. The 2-month-old golden retriever and Labrador retriever mix will train alongside Nationals players, staff and fans as part of his development to prepare him for his career after baseball. He is part of the Canine Companions program. Their dogs are specifically trained to perform practical tasks that mitigate physical, hearing, and cognitive disabilities, increasing their partners’ independence and mobility. I am sure the players and fans will enjoy participating in Natty’s development for such a worthy cause.
While Natty has been the talk of the town, Daylen Lile has not been far behind. Lile is a Louisville, Kentucky native. I enjoy his lovely southern drawl and his teammates voted him to have the best accent for the Nats Gala superlatives.
Well, Cincinnati is only about an hour and a half drive from Louisville. The Lile family and friends showed up for the series with the Reds earlier this week in large numbers and wearing custom gear. And, Daylen delivered. In the first two games, he hit 3 home runs, including the game winning run in the second game. Seeing Lile and his family go nuts when he hit that homer was amazing to watch. His dad was running down the steps in his section yelling “that is my son.” Pure joy.
We won’t talk about the third game with the Reds, which we’d all like to forget.
Fast forward to Friday night back in DC. Lile was on fire once more. He went 3-3 and hit ANOTHER home run, which again was needed for the win. In his last 7 games he is 12-17 with 4 home runs. You might recall that he went on a triple frenzy last September and won NL player of the month. Adding power to his speed only improves his ability to contribute to the team.
The Nats are 3-1 over their last four games and are tied for second place in the NL east with the Phillies. If we can beat the Orioles again tonight, we will have a .500 record.
I’m now two-thirds of the way through my tripping. Just enjoyed a lovely week in the Maldives at the fabulous Kuda Fushi resort. I rode a sea plane for the first time ever.
I regret, however, that I missed the reunion of campers from the first Nationals Fantasy Camp and I hope everyone had a great time last night.
