JOEY WIEMER! The Nationals picked him up on waivers and he is making history.
As I write this, the Nationals are playing the series opener against the Phillies and are leading 9-2. Wiemer has just recorded his first out of the season — during his 11th at bat. His streak tied Carlos Delgado’s 2002 streak for the longest out-free start to a season. The next person on the list is Yogi Berra who had 9 out-free at bats to start the 1956 season.
In Wiemer’s first ten at bats, he walked twice and crushed 8 hits, including a triple and 2 home runs. At 6’4″ and 225 pounds, he has some power. The 27-year old from Sylvania, Ohio has been with 6 different MLB organizations since 2024. Let’s hope he keeps up the hitting and has found a home for a while with the Nationals.
Wiemer is a good example of the benefits of playing the waiver wire. Toboni may have struck gold with Joey Wiemer. At the very least, Wiemer has provided the Nats with a spark and his start to the season will be something fans talk about for a long time.
The bats are working great against the Phillies. The team has 13 hits through 6 innings.
Toboni’s efforts to secure a regular first baseman continues, as the team traded for Curtis Mead of the White Sox and optioned Andres Chaparro to AAA Rochester. Welcome to the team Curtis!

I’m enjoying the start of the Nats’ season from Japan. Hoping our team keeps us the great play!
Let’s be the envy of sports.
