Young Architects of “The Envy of Sport”

A lot has been happening within the Nationals organization. The winter meetings are over. It’s “hot stove” season, aptly named that because to talk about baseball at this time of year people used to need to gather around the hot stove. Amid the recent hirings and trades, Paul Toboni has made a strong statement about the future of the team:

“[M]y goal is to make the Nationals the envy of sport.

To me, that means an organization defined by our relentless pursuit of excellence, strengthened by our connection to each other and fueled by our positive energy. As a result, we become an organization that players and staff are itching to join because they know it’s where they will develop and thrive most; a place that energizes our loyal fans and attracts new ones, and where success is achieved – and sustained – over time.”

LET’S GOOOOOO!

The front office and coaching staff are set with the announcement this week of the hiring of Ani Kilambi as General Manager. Kilambi comes to the Nationals from his role as the Phillies’ assistant general manager, where he oversaw Philadelphia’s research and development as well as its use of data.

Below is the 12-man coaching roster. Sean Doolittle is the only holdover from last year.

Last year, there were only 10 men on the coaching staff. The average age of the coaching staff was 51. This year it is just 36 years of age. Welcome to the new Nats!

The staff is meeting with players and making moves. Earlier this month, the Nationals traded closer Jose A. Ferrer to the Seattle Mariners for catcher Harry Ford and RHP Isaac Lyon. I am very excited to see what Ford brings to the team. At 22, he is a highly regarded prospect known for having a keen eye at the plate. Also, he plays the saxophone, just like Ferrer did, so the team is not losing any musical talent!

Best of luck to Josh Bell, who elected free agency and is moving on to the Minnesota Twins to help with their needs at first base.

Next month, the team will hold its first ever fantasy camp in West Palm. If you have been considering attending, now is the time to sign up. Hope to see you there!

Let’s be the envy of sport!
